The Blooming Beauty Of The Begonia Hails From Further Afield Than You Might Think

There are many blooming beauties found in gardens all over the world, and with patience and tender loving care every gardener can have the most stunning display of colour shapes, and sizes of sheer beauty all produced through the wonder of nature.

If you take any flower and look at it, it just confirms that nature is a wonderful thing, delicate flowers such as a rose, when it is first unfurling itself from a tight bud, jasmine that appears on the bush as a tight reddish bud and then bursts into a white delicate star shaped flower with the most beautiful scent, a sweet-pea appears as a green pod-like shape and then bursts into beautiful flowers of beautiful pinks, reds, lilacs, purples and make one realize how wonderful nature really is.

A huge variety of plants are ‘immigrants’ to the UK, but have become firm favourites, such as the begonia which originated high in the Andes of Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia, and grow at elevations of 10,000 to 12,000 feet.  The first begonia species to reach England in 1777 was a fibrous begonia with tiny pink flowers; furthermore tuberous begonias arrived at Kew Gardens in England around 1804.

The tuberous begonia as we know it today is essentially a 20th century development and were hybridized in the mild coastal climate of central California, and by the 1940s Hybrid tuberous begonias were world famous, thus tuberous begonias have been around for quite a while.

A professional gardener will experiment with plants, and nurture cuttings, and will know all there is to know about plant species and the “pukka” Latin names, but the average gardener that just wants to garden as a hobby will mostly go for colour and what they ultimately like to see growing in their garden.

The lavender plant is an old favourite, it is easy to cultivate, it smells wonderful, and has so many other uses.  Dried and crushed put is tiny sachets can make a wonderful gift to tuck into a linen store to give off its scent to the items stored there.

Lavender for so many years was always associated with the elderly lady, there is no rhyme or reason for this, but today lavender remains a favourite for young and old and is one of the most used oils, in aromatherapy, its soothing properties is used in many instances, and can give relief to many medical conditions.

With so many plants to choose from the novice gardener will go for plants that are easy to care for, and the geranium ticks all the boxes.  It is a beautiful plant and looks stunning in pots, window boxes and just as beautiful in beds, with vibrant colours which make a wonderful show in any garden.
